Outdoor Wedding A/V: How to Avoid Sound and Power Disasters

Outdoor ceremonies are stunning — until the wind grabs the mic, the speakers are 100 feet from the nearest outlet, or the sun glare wipes out your processional. The good news: every one of these disasters is preventable with early A/V planning. Here's the playbook.

Power: The #1 Outdoor Killer

Outdoor sites rarely have convenient power. If your DJ needs to be more than 100 feet from an outlet, you may need a generator — and it has to be quiet enough not to ruin your vows. Confirm power location and capacity before booking the site, and loop your DJ/A/V team in immediately.

Speaker Placement for Even Coverage

Indoors, walls bounce sound around. Outdoors, sound just... disappears. You need more careful speaker placement — often multiple smaller speakers aimed at the audience rather than one big speaker blasting the front row. A pro A/V team maps this during a walkthrough.

Wind and Wireless Microphones

Wind is the enemy of wireless mics. A breeze across a mic capsule turns your heartfelt ceremony into a rumble. Solutions: windscreens (foam covers), placement of mics out of direct wind, and backup wired mics for the officiant. A veteran team carries all of this.

Wireless Frequency Interference

Outdoor and urban settings are full of wireless traffic — other events, venues nearby, even digital devices. Cheap wireless systems drop out. Professional-grade systems with frequency coordination avoid the embarrassing 'moment of silence' mid-vow.

Sun, Shade, and Equipment

Direct sun overheats electronics and washes out screens. Plan shade for the DJ station and A/V gear, and angle any displays away from glare. Your DJ will also protect equipment from evening dew if your reception runs late.

The Backup Plan

Every outdoor event needs a weather backup — not just for guests, but for the equipment. Know where the A/V goes if it rains, how long a move-over takes, and whether your timeline can absorb it. Planning this in advance is the difference between a hiccup and a disaster.

Bring Your DJ In Early

The single most important step: consult your DJ and A/V team before you finalize your outdoor venue and layout. They'll catch the power, placement, and weather issues that planners focused on aesthetics miss — and save you from learning about them on your wedding day.
